How to remember the insertion of ECRL & ECRB

Can’t remember where the ECRL (Extensor carpi radialis longus) and ECRB (Extensor carpi radialis brevis) insert. I always confuse which one inserts on the 2nd metacarpal and which one inserts on the 3rd.  Remember the 3rd metacarpal is closest to the lateral epicondyle (origin of the muscles) so the shortest tendon (the Brevis) goes to the 3rd metacarpal.  FYI-both are innervated by the radial nerve.

Testing EPL function

The best way to test the EPL (to see if it is functioning) is to have the palm of the hand flat on the table and have the patient lift their thumb towards the ceiling (retropulsion).
