Test Questions

Name the joint that is crucial to forearm rotation and is often overlooked in the assessment and rehabilitation of a distal radius fracture:

Choice 1: PRUJ

Choice 2: DRUJ

Choice 3: ELBOW

Choice 4: WRIST

The distal radial ulnar joint is often a complication in distal radial fractures, both for ankylosis due to immobility and also the potential for soft tissue damage and subsequent laxity as a result of the forces occuring during the mechanism of injury.

just a statistic. The clinical significant is important for surgical decision making for tendon transfers. As a therapist it should be thought about when treating tendon transfers so that you know what kind of Range of motion and osteokinimatics to expect after a transfer.

When applying the principles of evidence-based practice the term specificity means the proportion of people who test:

Choice 1: positive when a condition is really absent.

Choice 2: who test negative when a condition is really absent.

Choice 3: positive when a condition is really present.

Choice 4: negative when a condition is really present.

"The value for specificity is gvern by d/(b+d), which represents the proportino of individuals who test negative for the condition out of all those who are trly normal, or the probability of a negative test in those who do not have the target condition. A highly specific instrument will rarely test positive when a person does not have the disease." (Portney/Watkins)

A patient is referred to hand therapy following ORIF of a distal radius fracture. The patient presents with wrist stiffness and scar hypersensitivity. Which of the following is the best modality to treat both of these conditions?

Choice 1: Moist hot pack

Choice 2: Paraffin

Choice 3: Fluidotherapy

Choice 4: Ultrasound

Fluidotherapy is a form of convection heat in which heated air circulates with particles around a body part. The temperature and amount of particle agitation can be adjusted. The heat of the Fluidotherapy will help with the joint stiffness and the particles circulating on and around the hand will assist with desensitization. Moist hot packs, paraffin and ultrasound are primarily heat modalities and will help with joint stiffness but less so with hypersensitivity.

A violinist is referred for evaluation and treatment due to complaints of dull left arm pain and numbness and tingling throughout the left hand. She also reports that her left hand gets cold occasionally while playing her violin. Her lower cervical quadrant test is negative. Which of the following special tests would be most appropriate to include in the objective exam?

Choice 1: Neer

Choice 2: Adson's

Choice 3: Yergason’s

Choice 4: Lippman’s

Adson's Maneuver is the correct answer because it is a test for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and ruling out cervical involvement, the most likely cause of the patient’s symptoms is TOS. The Neer test is for shoulder impingement, Yegason’s and Lippman’s tests are for bicipital tendonitis.

Study Tips

1. Learn the Language before you begin to study anything else! Study Anatomy, Neurology, Kinesiology. Learn the nerve tracts, the brachial plexus, the bones, the wrist compartments, muscles, ligaments, tendons, dermatomes, etc. I made colorful posters and put them up all around the house. Index cards, specific folders for specific topics, i.e. tendon protocols, done in colored pencils and markers, were helpful. I needed to draw and write and tried to be creative with color and different materials.
